Supplement Review: Storm Wing

The storms are a brewing! Hello 40k fans the latest formation to come our way is the Adeptus Astartes Storm Wing.
Like all formations it is a special detachment that doesn't use your allied detachment , does not have a limit to the amount of them you can take and uses the allied matrix according to what codex the units come from. This literally opens thousands of new combinations for armies and future shenanigans that I am sure will cause many a nerd rage for the duration of sixth edition.

The formation contains 1 Storm Raven and 2 Storm Talons. The first benefit in the formation is Data lattice.  As long as one Storm Talon is alive the Storm Raven now has strafing run, which means BS 5 for hitting ground targets as well as pinning. The next rule is Gunship Wing, you don't roll reserves for the Storm Talon. Instead they have a special escort rule in which all three fliers arrive together. One roll to rule them all! The only issue I have with this rule is that it tells you to reference escort craft and in that rule it contradicts the formation's special rule. I can only assume someone would want to argue about said rule but it is clear what the formation does. Lastly you have Independent Formation which means your sky boys wont have any Chapter Tactics bonuses but units from Codex Space Marines can embark into the Storm Raven. All in all I like the formation special rules. You won't have to worry about coming in piece meal , you get a little better hitting power with the Raven and they decided to not have simply not given them the special tactics but still let you load units.

So what does this formation mean for the game? For a minimum of 420 points you get a lot of air support which can be taken by a lot of codices. If Russ didn't intend for us to fly he wouldn't have given us formations. I really think this is going to buff Space Wolves as they declined at the beginning of sixth because of their lack of fliers. Now they will dominate the skies while drop pods and Rune priests devastate the grounds. Or now you can make a Space Marine air force with five or more Storm Talons with a Raven protecting it's flock. I don't know if you would really want that many Talons but now you have the ability to do so.

I eagerly anticipate the next digital content and the changes to the meta. However it seems that with every new formation or detachment the bounds of force organization are being torn apart. Soon will the force organization even mean anything when you can just take that unit outside of it? Only time will tell but I am a firm believer of choice and this digital content will make sure that you have the choice to play with all the toys you want.
